Websites and personal privacy policy influences customers

02 July 2010 : Industry News

There are sound business reasons for having a privacy policy statement on your website. Internet research has repeatedly shown that many consumers are reluctant to engage in electronic transactions because of concerns about the privacy of their personal data.

Privacy policies are a vital step towards encouraging trust in e-commerce among visitors to websites. They help visitors to make informed choices about trusting a company and doing business with them.

There are also legal obligations under the Data Protection Act 1998 requiring many website owners to have an accurate privacy policy statement and to display it appropriately.

Do you collect personal data on your website, even if it's just email addresses for a newsletter?

If your answer is yes, then you must have a privacy policy statement. If you haven’t, then you’re liable to a maximum potential fine of £500,000.

Each of your qualifying websites needs a privacy statement specific to the individual circumstances of your website and business processes.

It is not appropriate to copy a privacy statement from another website as it will not be bespoke to your business processes and will therefore not cover all the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998. This law also dictates that it is not enough to simply have a link on your site to a privacy statement, you must display it at the appropriate positions in your website.
